AAPA Bundle Picks for Aug 2019

August 2019 Bundle Picks

The August AAPA bundle was another good one, with a dozen colorful and interesting pieces. With so much to choose from, it was difficult to identify the best in any category...but here is my try:

Writing: Elizabeth R. Lindsey had two engaging essays in Wooden Nickles Vol. V, No. 1. The first, "Two Thirtieth Anniversaries," takes an historic event -- the 1989 protests at Tiananmen Square -- and describes how it affected her family and the plans for her wedding. The second, "Where Has Wooden Nickels Been All This Time?," catches us up on the last five years of her life.

Journal: Marey Barthoff's whimsical The Mareyland Register has a look all its own. This month's outing provides six pages of cartoons, "news" from around Mareyland, and a story about a young woman who uncovers her true self through journaling.

Project: Lawrence Peterson's meticulous letterpress printing has dazzled AAPA since he joined a few years ago. This month's 8 page (plus cover) booklet The Tools & Usage of the Early Printers preserves printing history by reprinting information from a 1907 type catalog. Each of the nine text pages is set in a different body type and adorned with appropriate cuts and ornaments.
